Google will delete billions of data from users who browsed in "incognito" mode.

In late 2023, Google agreed to a lawsuit filed in 2020. The lawsuit accused it of misrepresenting the data collected from users browsing the internet using its "incognito" private browsing mode. As a result, Google must delete billions of data records as part of the lawsuit settlement.
According to court documents filed in federal court in San Francisco, data reflecting users' private browsing activities must be deleted in the class action lawsuit. For the next five years, Google will stop tracking users' choices about private browsing and will allow users to block third-party cookies.
David Bois, the attorney representing the plaintiffs, said the settlement represents a historic step forward in demanding honesty and accountability from dominant technology companies. The terms agreed to in the court filings established that users will not receive damages from the settlement, but that they can still sue for damages individually.
