The Fission Surface Power project is creating a nuclear fission reactor.
According to a report by Universe Today, NASA is conducting the Fission Surface Power (FSP) project, “the space agency seeks to establish a reliable and long-lasting energy source for future human missions to the Moon” (El Imparcial, 2024). So far, nuclear energy is the most viable, as it is the most reliable and clean option in the long term. Furthermore, what is essential for  ensure a constant supply of energy.

The first stage of the initiative has already been completed. A preliminary design for the reactor and associated systems has been submitted by three companies specializing in nuclear technology: Lockheed Martin, Westinghouse, and IX. The designs are not solely designed for the Artemis mission to the Moon, but will be useful for other missions to Mars in the long term.

The nuclear fission reactor, as a power source for space bases, could be the beginning of future missions to other planets. The second phase of the Artemis project, which will evaluate the effectiveness of the FSP, is scheduled to begin in 2025.
